Hands-On Review: Is the OrangeMonkie Foldio4 Worth the 7-Month Wait?

After backing the OrangeMonkie Kickstarter in August 2025, the much-anticipated Foldio4 has finally arrived. Following a seven-month wait for fulfillment, I was eager to see if this "ultra-large" portable studio lived up to the hype.

First Impressions & Unboxing

Everything arrived perfectly intact. As a "thank you" for the shipping delays, OrangeMonkie included a massive Foldio4 branded tote bag. This was a thoughtful touch; considering the size of the unit, having a dedicated bag makes transporting it between floors or to off-site locations significantly easier.

The Build: Intuitive but Massive

The first thing you notice about the Foldio 4 is the scale. With a 35-inch shooting area, it is exceptionally tall and deep—it actually hit my chandelier when I first opened it!

  • Setup: Despite the somewhat vague instructions, assembly is very intuitive. The integrated magnets are impressively strong, ensuring the unit feels stable rather than flimsy.

  • Storage: While it’s too large for me to keep assembled permanently, it folds down to a mere 4-inch footprint. It’s easy to slide behind a table or into a closet when not in use.

Lighting: The Star of the Show

The lighting system is where the Foldio 4 truly shines. Delivering 120 watts of power, it features:

  • Integrated Top LEDs: Two rows of diffused lights for beautiful overhead coverage.

  • Magnetic Halo Bars: Two 18-inch vertical bars that snap onto the sides, staying exactly where you place them.

  • 4-Channel Controller: This is a game-changer. You can independently dim or kill specific lights to create dramatic shadows and mood lighting, which is a massive upgrade over my previous setup.

The Backdrop Dilemma

While the studio itself is excellent, the backdrop system is a mixed bag. The unit comes with three standard backdrops (White, Gray, and Black) that attach via Velcro.

  • The White Backdrop: This has a durable, "plastic-y" feel that I prefer, though it is slightly translucent. If you have a light source (like a window) behind the unit, the OrangeMonkie branding on the back may show through.

  • The Fabric Backdrops (Black/Gray): These are magnets for dust and lint. Worse, the fabric tends to "droop" in the center, which can create unwanted lines in your shots and lead to extra post-production editing.

  • The "Extra" Backdrops: I also ordered the additional color backdrops, and frankly, I'm disappointed. Unlike the originals, these don't have Velcro. They rely on small clips that feel insufficient for the heavy paper material. My yellow backdrop already has creases from trying to "manhandle" it into place.

The Smart Turntable

The 360-degree turntable promises Bluetooth/IR integration and app-based editing, which I’m excited to test. My only immediate gripe is the power cord—it’s incredibly short. Unlike my smaller battery-operated versions, this will definitely require an extension cord to be functional in most studio layouts.

Final Verdict

The Foldio 4 is a significant upgrade in terms of scale and lighting control. I no longer have to worry about catching my studio walls in the frame when shooting larger items.

However, it isn't perfect. The backdrop mounting system for the "extra" colors feels like a design oversight, and the fabric backdrops require some "rigging" to stay taut. If you can move past the backdrop quirks, the sheer power of the lighting and the massive shooting volume make it a powerful tool for professional product photography.

If you know where I can improve with this setup (especially with the backdrops), I want to hear from you!
